A Wade in The Water Production created from a story by Gail Everett-Smith, Mama, Henry & Us Gospel Singers features a screenplay written by Nikki Wade and is directed by Gail Everett-Smith, Nikki Wade, and Trenton Lumpkin.
Set between the mid-1960s and mid-1980s, the film chronicles the lives of the Everett Family Gospel Singers as they navigate the emotional highs and lows of their beloved wife and mother, Mary, whose developing mental illness was triggered by the onset of early menopause. As the family struggles to understand and support Mary, they must reconcile traditional beliefs, family obligations, and their unwavering faith.
This poignant and thought-provoking drama examines the complex intersection of mental health and spirituality within the Black church, shedding light on the stigma surrounding mental illness while celebrating the strength, perseverance, and love that sustain families through adversity.
