First Comes Love

First Comes Love

Director(s): Tanya Martineau

Runtime: 18:15 minutes

Language: English

Genre: Unspecified

Festival Category: Short Films

Synopsis

Taylor, an ambitious, caring yet insecure woman in her early 30s, has spent years cultivating what appears to be the perfect life with her long-term boyfriend, Khalil. Since a child, she has dreamed of getting married to her fairytale prince and decided that Khalil was her knight in shining armor. To her social media followers, they are #CoupleGoals—happy, stylish, deeply in
love. But behind the filtered photos and adoring captions lies a relationship built on performance and the need for validation.

Khalil has been a passive participant in his own life, allowing Taylor to carefully curate their five years together both online and in reality. However, Taylor’s most recent push to take their
relationship to the next level has challenged Khalil to decide for himself whether he wants the life their followers think exists. When Taylor discovers that their future together is in jeopardy,
her world begins to unravel. Desperate to hold on to her fairy tale ending, she stages a romantic evening to win him back, documenting the night via social media.

What begins as seduction, however, quickly morphs into captivity. Every rose-colored social media post hides the disturbing truth of Khalil’s duress. The tighter Taylor holds on to him and the digital fairytale she created, the looser her grip on sense of self and reality. Succumbing to the pressures of societal expectations to uphold a pristine image, Taylor is compelled to
convince the world – and herself – that she is living the life she imagined. But, it could cost her everything.
